About Us

"For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise."

Galatians 3:26-29

The South Marion church of Christ is a congregation of Christ’s disciples who have agreed to work and worship together as the New Testament directs. Individually, we call ourselves simply “Christians” because that is the name that Jesus’ disciples wore (Acts 11:26) and that is the name whereby we can glorify God. (1 Pet 4:16). Congregationally, we call ourselves a “church of Christ” as this is a Scriptural designation (Rom 16:16) for a congregation and one that also glorifies our Lord and Savior to whom we belong.

Our congregation functions independently of other congregations and does not function as a subset of a larger religious structure that is commonly called a “Church” or “Denomination”. The word “church” was not used in the sense of a denomination in the New Testament. This organizational concept (of a “Church” made up of congregations) first came to be in the Catholic “Church” and has been repeated in the Protestant “Churches” as well. We are neither Catholic nor Protestant and reject denominational structure all together.

We (as individuals) belong only to the Lord (Our Head) and to His church, His universal body of saved people (Eph 5:22-33) and to a local congregation (Rom 16:1), the largest and smallest, and the only organized structure of disciples found in the New Testament.

From what we read in the New Testament, we are alarmed at the division that exists among those who profess to be disciples of Jesus. We see things in a state that is a far cry from Jesus’ prayer that His disciples would be one as He and the Father are one (Jn 17:20-21). The solution, as we see it, would be the end of all denominations along with their names, creeds, and allegiances. Then all men could simply be “Christians” who follow Jesus by obeying His gospel and by joining themselves to local congregations that are directed by His Word.

We seek to convert men to Jesus, not to ourselves. We have no clergy. We have no doctrine to defend but the gospel. We are still learning and do not claim to have all the answers. We would love to have you worship with us. We also extend an invitation for you to study the Bible with us. Let us meet you or hear from you soon.
